| After reading a lot of praise about this young band from Long Island, not to mention numerous comparisons to one of my favorite bands, Thursday, I picked this disc up. Recently signed to hardcore haven Victory Records this band quickly went to record their debut album with the same producer who produced Thursday's "Full Collapse." Sure their are some similarities in sound to that album, but Taking Back Sunday brings a more melodic approach. Think an equal balance between the new Jimmy Eat World stuff, Juliana Theory, and of course Thursday. Catchy hooks and lush vocals make you feel comfortable until the guitars suddenly turn heavy and screams take over the background vocals. There is also some piano and female background vocals interspersed to throw some variety into the songs. The lyrical content is very "emo" with almost every song having to do with girls, but that dosen't make this album sound whiny. It instead comes off as honest and filled with an unbrideled passion that should establish Taking Back Sunday as one the premier "emo-core" bands making music today. This is one of the best debut albums I have ever heard from a band, and I would be shocked if "Tell All Your Friends" didn't make it onto my top 10 albums for 2002. |
